How to fix MP4/MOV metadata exported by Google Takeout
Videos exported through Google Takeout often expose date problems before photos do. An MP4 or MOV file may have QuickTime fields, filesystem creation time, modification time and JSON sidecar data. If the destination reads the wrong field, the video appears in the wrong year or day.
Microsoft Store will be the recommended path once the link is available. The classic installer remains available from the site.
Unsigned .exe noticeThe .exe installer is not signed yet. Windows or the browser may show warnings during download or installation. If you prefer to avoid those messages, use Microsoft Store when the link is available.
Why video needs extra care
Photos usually rely on EXIF, XMP or IPTC. Videos may rely on QuickTime/MP4 fields that applications do not interpret the same way. Some services also change timestamps during upload, editing or download.
That is why correction should be tested in players, photo managers and the final destination you plan to use.
Minimum sample
Include old videos, recent videos, iPhone MOV files, Android MP4 files, edited files and videos from shared albums. If the sample has only one type of file, it can hide problems.
- Check dates before and after in at least two programs.
- Keep a copy of the original videos.
- Review cases where a JSON exists but the matching video was not found.
How MetaVault handles the batch
MetaVault Studio applies metadata in batches when the match is safe, preserves visual content and records exceptions. The report is essential for videos because an unprocessed file may look identical while still being out of timeline order.
Where this fits in MetaVault Studio
The app workflow is designed to import a folder, apply metadata with a report, and keep problem cases visible for review.

Common questions
Do MP4 and MOV use the same fields?
Not exactly. Both can use QuickTime structures, but different applications may read different fields.
Does the process re-encode the video?
The intent is to change metadata, not recompress the video content.
Why do some videos remain out of order?
The file may lack a reliable sidecar, dates may conflict, or the destination app may prioritize another field.
